Founded by the first King of Italy
Like all good things, Fontanafredda was born from a love story in 1858, that between the first King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II, and Rosa Vercellana, The couple had two children: Maria Vittoria and Emanuele Alberto, the man who founded the winegrowing estate. Now with 120 hectares of certified organic land, Fontanafredda produces the great wines of the Langhe that rest in its 19th century cellars: a place just waiting to be discovered, where to learn anecdotes of the royal family and the intriguing habits of the King, and to admire the majesty of the big oak barrels which reveal what has made Fontanafredda an icon of Barolo throughout the world.
A crown on our heads and the earth in our hands
In 1878, Emanuele Alberto Guerrieri, Count of Mirafiore, son of the first King of Italy, founded Casa E. di Mirafiore with his estates in Barolo and Fontanafredda. A winery which has always been a pioneer, thanks to the foresight of Emanuele Alberto, a nobleman with a modern approach to wine and a community-oriented attitude. Of aristocratic origin and now with a strong rural identity, Casa E. di Mirafiore expresses the authentic oenological tradition of the Langhe.
The history from 1858
Inaugurated to celebrate the 160th anniversary of Fontanafredda, the museum tells the story of the estate. A journey consisting of four different area within the historical cellars, offering visitors a glimpse of everything that has made the Village a local symbol since the 19th century. From the original bottles of Barolo owned by the first king of Italy, to the more recent advertisements for wine “the way we like to tell it”. A surprise on the lower floor offers you the chance to experience old-fashioned wine production, with a collection of historical oenological tools.
